Well Played, Legal Aid of Manasota

April 3, 2013

Ask us to name a nonprofit that worked with not one but seven business partners during the 36-Hour Giving Challenge, spanning both Sarasota and Manatee counties, and we could deliver a quick answer: Legal Aid of Manasota.

The mighty effort resulted in 160 online gifts totaling nearly $11,000 in donations. Checks and cash were also collected off-line, tipping the total dollars raised to $15,000, together with matching funds from The Patterson Foundation.

Caragiulos stepped up to place Giving Challenge flyers at each restaurant table during the Challenge and sponsored a “Happy Hour/Happy Giving” event on March 5.

Secondly, the formidable law firm partners Icard Merrill, Bentley & Bruning, Syprett MeshadBlalock Walters, PAKallins & Little, and the Law Offices of Larry Chulock carved out a big-time presence using small gatherings, meeting power, video and social media.

  • The firms promoted giving on Facebook pages prior to and during the Challenge.
  • Several firms were involved in taping short videos posted on YouTube and Facebook (both personal pages and the firms’ pages).
  • Several firms promoted giving at Bar/paralegal meetings.
  • Flyers were available in firm lobbies prior to and during the Challenge.
  • Several firms hosted “Coffee and Giving” events on location, where the public was invited to stop by and donate.  Legal assistants were available to help.

I learned a few things from all of this:

  • Holy cow, law firms are Facebooking. Who knew? I have joined some of their online communities.
  • Attorneys can really kick it outside of the courtroom too.
  • Local attorneys and their firms truly believe in and support Legal Aid of Manasota and its important role in our community.

Kudos to everyone who made it happen!
