Four Hopes For the Approaching Asteroid

February 12, 2013

Do you find it a little strange that we are not more concerned about the asteroid half the size of a football field that will be passing closer to Earth than many of our weather satellites on Friday?

The experts in asteroids half the size of football fields are telling us we have nothing to worry about: there is literally no chance it will collide with Earth.

We either have a lot of trust in people who know more about something than we do, or we are resting comfortably in the reality that it doesn’t matter either way. There simply isn’t a lot we can do, and thinking too much about it may scare the daylights out of us.

On our local piece of planet Earth, an unprecedented opportunity is approaching for your nonprofit on March 5 & 6, 2013.

In addition to the massive donations that will be made on the www.givingpartnerchallenge.org platform during the Giving Challenge, lots of traffic will be headed over to nonprofit profiles in The Giving Partner at www.thegivingpartner.org as the community says “yes” to learning more about what you do.

Forget about your Challenge fundraising goals just for a moment and consider how you can harvest this opportunity to rally your team around aligned messaging and increased capacity.

We hope the following four things are true:

  1. All of the nonprofit board members and staff members on your team have actually seen your published profile in The Giving Partner. (Hint: now is a great time to forward them a link!)
  2. Collectively, you feel as if the information about your nonprofit and the way you have conveyed it in your profile is representative of your organization.
  3. If there are aspects of your profile you would like to enhance—like conveying more intentionality with written plans or policies—you will commit to focusing on a couple of those things over the next year.
  4. If your organization would like to update its profile before the Challenge, you will take care of it by Friday—the cut off for changes that will be published before March 5.

The possibility for exposure and awareness-building is huge during the Giving Challenge, depending on how you play it.  Don’t let the approaching opportunity be a football field-sized asteroid passing close to you, ignored. Remember, this is about more than money. Bring it on!
